FMCG Exporters: Going Beyond Our Comparative Advantage
Australia’s export market is strong, contributing significantly to our wider economy; however, these exports are predominantly made up of resources and minerals. When it comes to value-added goods, such as FMCG, the export market is best described as underdeveloped.
For FMCG manufacturers, our reputation for producing premium food and beverage products, combined with a comparative advantage compared to our international competitors and recent government incentives, presents a seemingly strong export opportunity. However, very few of our FMCG manufacturers are exploring this opportunity available to export goods.
We look more closely at the export market and consider why FMCG firms are reluctant to take the leap. We then consider the steps and approach required to build the necessary capabilities, explore this opportunity, and find success in international markets.
